The Mommy Cleanse

I'm sitting in the bathtub listening to a 'Calm Down' playlist on Spotify.

Last night I cleaned out my closet and read about forty pages of another Jodi Picoult book. (For those of you who don't know, she is pretty much my favorite author of all time. Of course that's right behind J.K. Rowling, but that's neither here nor there).

I started off the week doing a food cleanse I found on the Hello Glow blog and just decided to keep going, by cleansing out a bunch of other areas of my life that were taking up too much space in my mind. This week ended up being entirely devoted to cleansing myself; mind, body, and spirit.

My home is my safe haven. It's where I build memories with my husband and my son. So Saturday I spent the day detoxing our house and making my own household cleaners. Yep. Floor cleaner, dust cleaner and rags, all purpose cleaner, and a fresh lavender room spray. (Find all the recipes I borrowed at Hello Glow)

Sunday through Tuesday my husband I focused on doing a food cleanse after a crazy week where we ate terribly and we were definitely feeling it. We stuck pretty closely to the 3-day cleanse I found, however I have to be honest. Morning number two's smoothie was NASTY. We took one taste and both of us looked like we were gonna throw up. So instead, I just threw a bunch of the ingredients I would use to make power balls into the blender. This one was:

1 cup almond milk

1 heaping handful spinach

1 spoonful peanut butter

1/3 cup dark chocolate chips

1/4 cup chia seeds

2 ripe bananas

Topped with shredded coconut

I'm not going to lie. The detox was HARD. Everything tasted great (other than that one mishap), but we kept finding ourselves so hungry. Cleansing and detox's however, are not necessarily meant to be easy. They are meant to challenge you, help you to refocus, and be better.

It was this perception that encouraged me to keep the cleansing going.

So, this week has been all about cleansing for me. Cleansing my mind, body, and spirit. Although I started off the week doing a food cleanse, I just kept going by cleaning out my closet and trying to take some extra time for myself. When I was cleaning out my closet I got rid of a lot of things I can't even remember wearing. But I also found some pieces I totally forgot about and would love to wear again. At one point I found a maxi dress I bought when I was pregnant, and of course at that time it fit perfectly. When I first tried it back on last night though, it was way too big. But then I thought about trying it with a belt and Wah-La! New life breathed into such a simple item.

Sometimes when we take the time to just breathe and clean out the dusty, forgotten-about spaces of our hearts, we breathe new life into ourselves. And for mommy's that's especially important. It's easy to forget that we still matter too and we need to take the time to do things we enjoy. We need to make the time to do things that fill us up, make us feel happy, and remind us that we are more than just spit-up cleaning, diaper changing, milk-making, smile producing, HERO'S. We are OURSELVES.

So do a food detox. Clean out your closet. Take a bath and read a book. Paint. Cook. Watch an extra episode of Parks & Rec. Laugh. Just do what YOU need to do to breathe new life into your own spirit and just watch how much brighter you see life again.
